Top 10 Tips for 2012 Application #9 Tracking and Communication COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Top 10 Tips for 2012 Application â€" #9 Tracking and Communication COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog This is the 9th entry in our series entitled Top 10 Application Tips. I highly recommend that you take the time to slowly read this entry as it will answer many of the questions we have been receiving by email. I know it is a little long, but hang in there because this entry will help you to understand how you can track what is going on with your application after it has been submitted. Do please note that you cannot change any information on your application after it has been submitted. Also, and I cannot emphasize this enough, when an application becomes complete in our system has no impact on the decision. What does matter is that all application information is submitted by the deadline. It is normal for us NOT to have all applications completed for up to three weeks past the deadline. We manually review each application for completion and this takes time. Do not panic if you log in after you have submitted your application and see that it is not marked as complete. The Committee does not start to meet until three weeks after the deadline and there are reading rounds so to speak. By this I mean that not all readers read at the same time and thus not all applications need to be ready at the same time. Thus if your application is not complete until well after the deadline this is not something to be concerned about. When your application is complete you will receive an email from us letting you know. If there is an issue with your application that needs to be addressed we will contact you. Now on to the visuals . . . #1 : You Are Working On Your Application But Have Not Submitted It Let us start with what you see when you log in to the application system while your application is in progress and has not been submitted. This is what you will see when you log in. Note that next to Submission Status it says Not Submitted (at the end of the red arrow). In this example, the applicant has also entered the names of the three recommenders and they are displayed, along with the status. #2: You Have Submitted Your Application Now lets move on to when you submit your application. When you log into your application after it has been submitted the main page will show the message Submission Status: Submitted (see arrow #1). You will also notice in this example that one letter of recommendation has been submitted (see arrow #2). At this point no documents will show up. Do not worry, this is because we have not printed your application yet. #3: We Print Your Application This Does Not Typically Happen The Same Day You Submit The next step that will occur is that we will print your application for review. Do understand that it can take up to 15 days for us to print your application after it has been submitted. Please do not panic if your application has not been printed. The important thing is not when your application is printed, the important thing is that your application is submitted by the deadline. If you look at this next picture you will notice two changes from the picture above. First, the status has changed to Application Printed Manual Review of All Information Submitted In Progress (see the red arrow #1). Second, arrow #2 shows that we have not marked your application as complete because we have not finished our manual review. We need to make sure we can read your transcripts for example. Third, you will notice that transcripts, test scores, and other supporting documents now appear (see red arrow #3). Please note that the default status for the following documents, if you uploaded a document, at the time your application is printed is Received Official Academic Resume International Fellows Program Essay Personal Statement Standard/CV Resume We find that the vast majority of our applicants submit documents that are legible and complete so the default status is Received Official. Do note that in some cases there are issues with these documents and if so, we will contact you. Special Note: the IFP statement or Lemann fellowship statement is not mandatory and if you did not submit an IFP or Lemann statement they might not appear, or if it does appear it could read Not Applicable, Not Received, or Waived. Above the Other Supporting Documents section you will see test scores. Please note that the default status for the test scores at the time your application is printed is Not Received even if you entered the scores. This is the same for transcripts the status after we print will read Not Received. After we manually review your application this information will be tracked. If there is an issue we will contact you. Please do not panic at the message Not Received even if you self reported your scores and uploaded your transcripts this is normal. We find that some applicants will not enter all of the information so we will perform a manual check to make sure we have all of the information we need. Also remember that we do not look for official test reports until after admission offers are made WE ONLY USE SELF REPORTED SCORES to make admission decisions so please do not contact us at this point in time to see if we have your official scores on file. In the above example the native language of the applicant is English so TOEFL is marked Not Applicable. If this were an applicant that speaks English as a second language this will read Not Received. The last comment for this example is, please ignore the message on the bottom near arrow #4 that says Submission Status: Not Submitted. That references a part of the application we no longer use but it is hard coded into the system it means nothing. #4: Complete All Documents Tracked But Not Sent to Committee This next picture shows that we have everything we need. All the letters are submitted and we accept unofficial transcripts and self reported test scores for admission review. However the status shows Incomplete and above that you will notice is still says Manual Review of All Information Submitted in Progress. A final sign off must be made before the file gets sent off to the Committee and this one is just waiting. #5: Complete . . . But with a Question This next shot shows you the message Documents still pending Application is Under Review with the Application Status below that reads Complete. This is a case where we have everything we need, however there may be an issue we feel we need to resolve before the file is sent to the Committee. There is no need for you to contact us if you are in this status. If there is a question we need to ask you, we will contact you. #6: Complete Sent to Committee! This final shot is when you know your application has been sent to Committee. You will also receive an email from us when your file is complete in case you do not want to compulsively log into the system to keep checking =) You can see on the top that it states Application Complete No additional documents. As a reminder, please ignore the submission status at the bottom. Last year our application was in two parts and it is not possible for us to get rid of that message at this time. It means nothing so ignore it. Thank you for your patience as we work to complete several thousand files in a short period of time. If documents were submitted by mail it will likely take us longer to complete your file. Again, when a file is complete has no impact on the decision of the Committee. Please keep reading this blog for more details on the admission review process.

In particular, female respondents from Jose s Southwestern caf give a higher score as compared to those in Santa Fe restaurant. Whereby a higher score for satisfaction means that female customers are more satisfied with the Mexican restaurant experience at Santa Fe restaurant than Jose s Southwestern caf (Field, 2009). As for whether the customers are likely to return to the restaurant or recommend the restaurant, female customer at gave a higher score for Santa Fe restaurant than Jose s Southwestern caf . Leadership Is Complex And Dynamic Transformational Leadership

Since scholars have begun studying leadership, many different theories and approaches have been developed. Early analysis from 1900-1950 focused on identifying leader and follower characteristics (SEDL, 2015). Since researchers were unable to isolate a single trait or combination of traits, theorists began to examine how varying situations impact leader skills and behaviors (SEDL, 2015). These studies attempted to determine which behaviors emerged from effective leaders. Researchers used a contingency model to thus examine the connection between personal traits, situational variables and leader effectiveness (SEDL, 2015). In the 1970’s and 1980’s, researchers again looked at individual traits, but this time did so through the lens of organizational effectiveness (SEDL, 2015). After over a century of investigation, dozens of theories have emerged and led to the conclusion that leadership is complex and dynamic. Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership has been perhaps the most popular and widely studied leadership theory within the past 30 years (McCleskey, 2014). In 1978, James MacGregor Burns defined transformational leaders. Burns noted that these leaders â€Å"raise[s] the followers’ level of consciousness about the importance and value of desired outcomes and the methods of reaching those outcomes† (McCleskey, 2014, p. 120). Evaluate This Case Using the Three Elements Free Essays

MGMT 325 â€Å"Will Technology Save the Publishing Industry† pg 104. September 16, 2012 Case Study Questions 1. Evaluate the impact of the Internet on newspaper and book publishers using the value chain and competitive forces models. We will write a custom essay sample on Evaluate This Case Using the Three Elements or any similar topic only for you Order Now The publishing industry has been hit hard by new market entrants and substitute products and services. Newspapers are the most troubled segment of the publishing industry because of the availability of alternatives and publishers’ inability to protect their content. Traditional print newspapers can’t match the ease of use and immediacy of online papers. It’s also much more expensive to print and distribute traditional newspapers adding to publishers’ overhead costs. Many of the traditional newspapers’ primary activities are expensive while those activities don’t necessarily exist for online newspapers; obtaining paper, maintaining printing press equipment, distributing print papers, gathering old papers, collecting fees, etc. Online news sites don’t have any of those expenses or processes to deal with. Traditional book publishers are facing similar situations from substitute products and services and new market entrants. Many brick-and-mortar bookstores have closed for two main reasons: online sales and new electronic downloads to e-readers and smartphones. As with newspapers, online book sellers and e-books don’t have all the overhead costs of traditional book stores and publishers nor all the processes to get products to customers. 2. How are newspapers and book publishers changing their business models to deal with the Internet and e-book technology? Online newspapers are pursuing more online advertising dollars and partnering with Google and Yahoo to share revenue from advertising. Some news sites charge fees for newspaper content delivered to new reading devices. Another option is for news sites to charge fees for â€Å"premium† news and opinion. Because advertising remains a major source of revenue, the newspapers must grow their online revenue fast enough to offset their losses from print advertising. Internet advertising ranks second only to television for ad spending. E-books have become a new channel for book content distribution. Sales are skyrocketing thanks to the popularity of Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader and the iPad. Publishing companies have begun investing more resources in the Kindle and iPad as delivery platforms for their books and less money in traditional delivery platforms like print news and bound books. Textbook publishers are working on iPad versions of their offerings; newspapers have apps out for the iPad and offer Kindle subscriptions to readers; and major publishers are contracting with software companies to convert existing files to e-reader compatible products. 3. How can newspaper and book publishers take better advantage of the Internet? What will it take for them to benefit from e-books? Explain your answer. Book publishers are on the right track by investing more resources in the Kindle and iPad as delivery platforms for their books and less money in traditional delivery platforms like print news and bound books. Apple announced in February 2011 that it would receive a 30 percent fee for each sale of digital content sold through its App Store. Apple also prohibited app developers from placing links to external Web sites within their apps, effectively preventing these developers from guiding their app users to product offerings that would not be subject to Apple’s fees. Apple also plans to prevent publishers and other content providers from receiving data about their iPad customers unless customers give permission beforehand. Publishing companies have strenuously objected, arguing that they need this information to successfully market and advertise their products. Apple says the rule protects the privacy of iPad owners. While Apple’s policies may protect iPad owner privacy, they also work against publishers who need data and information about products to effectively continue developing products customers want. Apple’s policies also put too much power in one company’s hands and prohibit the free flow of products, data, and information. Google, on the other hand, hopes to offer a more â€Å"open† model that allows readers to access books using any Web browser. Its advantage is that it is not tied down to any individual device. That gives an advantage to readers and to publishers who can access data and information and understand the marketplace better. The model also gives Google a much larger reach in the marketplace. And, instead of just e-reader users, Google’s target audience will be the 190 million monthly Internet users in the United States. 4. Will technology be able to save the newspaper and book publishing industries? Explain your answer. Technology does hold the possibility of saving newspaper and book publishing industries, but only if those industries continue to change and modify their business models. Newspapers must continue to move away from print and more toward online content, changing the way they provide customers with information. They cannot continue to rely on old methods hoping online content will go away. The same can be said in regards to book publishers. They must continue to evolve their products, taking advantage of the cost-savings that comes with digital versions of their books. They must continue to pressure those companies who want to control the â€Å"channel† like Apple and insist on being a central part of how content is delivered and at what price. Publishers can and should offer promotional items and events in e-books and news sites that are not possible in print versions, including interactive items like coupons, contests, and access to additional content. Middle Class Dillusionment free essay sample

In 1958, a man named George Mowry explains s economic, social, and political divisions of the progressivism movement. The progressivism movement ties in a lot with our society today and shows how history does indeed repeat itself. Mowry describes the good, and bad of progressivism, but emphasizes the bad. Mowry is really trying to exhibit the differences between capitalism and socialism in his essay and explain why progressivism is not good for the well being and future of America, which can be proven today but our economic instability and division as a nation. More importantly however Mowry displays how progressives try to create, â€Å"heaven on earth† by their moral actions. Mowry first describes the type of people who are involved in progressivism. People who were involved in progressivism were the solid middle class, who were intellectual and ethical climate of age, a significant cluster of prejudices and biases, and people who created great inventions, beautiful pictures, and the law. We will write a custom essay sample on Middle Class Dillusionment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The people of the solid middle class were lawyers, newspaper, publishing, independent manufacturers, merchants, medicine, banking, and real-estate. The progressive leaders included the Chicago tribune family, and Charles Evan Hughes, â€Å"if names mean anything, an overwhelming proportion of this reform group came from old American stock with British origins consistently indicated. † More dangerous than rich people who inherited money from their ancestors was their rich youth, â€Å"Obviously this was a period, like the ones after the war of 1812 and 1850’s, when energetic and incautious youth took command. † This is ironic because all of their ancestors earned their money through capitalism and that’s what progressives are trying to take away now. Religious affiliations of the progressivism movement were the woman of the Quaker faith, and Jewish faith. Overall the progressives hated the economic system of capitalism, believed that the wealthy are bad people who we must take away money from and give it to the masses, and most of these people are young. Joseph Medill Patterson, whose godfather founded the Tribune resigned from the Chicago commissions of public works to become a socialist. Patterson believed it was impossible to reform a city under capitalism, â€Å" he announced , it was impossible to reform the city and country under capitalism. Patterson was exemplifying capitalism vs. socialism. Capitalism is the idea that Capital is owned, operated, and traded for the purpose of generating profits for private owners or shareholders. Emphasis on individual profit rather than on workers or society as a whole. On the other hand socialism is according to his/her ability, to each according to his contribution. Emphasis on profit being distributed among the society or workforce in addition to receiving a wage. Today we can see many links between capitalism and socialism. Our government today is run on progressivism/ socialist ideals. President Barack Obama has several plans and ideas to help the poor by giving them the money of the rich people, and supplying them with health care (obamacare) and so on. Progressives wanted to help people, they wanted to help the poor, this was not morally wrong but many other people saw that this was hurting our economy. Our government is socialist/ progressive because they want to have government control over other money and they want to have the ability to decide where that money goes. But you can’t just do that. If those people earned their wealth they should have every right to keep it, they should not be entitled to try to help the poor. Furthermore during this time of the progressivism movement there were many Democrat-republicans who supported the idea of progressivism. Some of those commonly known leaders are Theodore Roosevelt, Robert La Follete, Lincoln Steffens, Willam Allen White, Woodrow Wilson, John Johnson, and Hooke Smith of Georgia. Another group of people who were making a movement was populism. Populism were a group of people who were economically secured, well educated, middle class group who arose from farmer distress in a period of acute depression. â€Å" According to William Allen White, populism had ‘shaved its whiskers, washed its shirt, put on a derby, and moved up into the middle class†¦ populism arose from a farmer distress in a period of acute depression. Its reforms were belly reforms. The movement was led by angry men and woman not too far removed from the Grange hall. The motivation of these farmers was heart. They believed its not fair to take farm land and stick a bunch of windmills on there, not only was it not fair but it also made the agriculture business lose money. In a specific case California lost money for putting up windmills in farmer land and turning the production of agriculture into a nominal size. This idea of motivation of heart also relates to today because our motivation for supplying all of this aid comes from heart, because we believe it isn’t fair that one shouldn’t have medical care, or food etc. However there are just some gray areas to this plan that need to be filled and that is what in term ends up costing us millions. Another important point that Mowry discusses is the rise of industrial and commercial cities. The positive things about the rise of these cities are that it was, â€Å" a refuge from an ugly country side and hostile natural environment†, and it also provided a place of excitement and opportunities. In contrast to the positive things were the negative things. The negative things about the rise of industrial and commercial cities is that its, â€Å"Devils berg of crimes†, successful= financial workers and failures if they remained family workers. It also created an anti-urban feeling which romanticized pioneer past and agrarian background, involved western stories and virtues of the countryside. Miss. Glasgow believed, â€Å"Country was the world as God has planned it, the city as man had made it. † There was definitely some mixed feelings between the citizens about urban and a city lifestyle. Mowry described the income people had into three categories. The first category was the upper-class which we defined as, â€Å"people who had more money than was good for them†. The middle class were those who had just enough and the lower class were those who had much less than was morally good for them. In regards to these three categories each community made artificial arrangements by property, classical economic laws repeatedly described in the past as natural had become artificial and progressives had destroyed the popular sanction behind the laws of rent, prices and wages. In response to the actions of the progressives came the enforcement and rise of labor unions. Mowry viewed the labor unions as a menace not only to the employer but to the entire community, the small employer and many middle class professional unions gave the same results of industrial monopoly. The labor unions made a steady decrease in opportunities for the individual operating as an individual, thus putting an end to open society, and putting the burden of the industrial revolution upon the middle class. In an attempt to rebuttal the vicious attack of the labor union on progressives the progressives created a co operation of progressive and organized labor. This operation left only the progressives to lead. The captain of industry and labor boss was standard. Monopolistic closed shop was an abomination not to be tolerated with or without the government and progressives became a majority. The progressives were motivated by fear and confidence to exceed any other group. They believed that they were â€Å"The good men†, â€Å"The better element†, â€Å"The moral crowd† because of the fact that they believed in helping people. The progressives planned to increase the number of â€Å"large hearted men† to counteract the class organization of both capital and labor. The progressives believed that gaining more support from others would make them the majority and be favored, loved, and even looked up too. The progressives wanted to eliminate capitalism and labor unions. The progressives were strong for fighting back against the mass numbers of capitalists and labor unions, but fight they did and they did not back down. Although the intentions of progressives were morally correct it was not economically correct for the success and future of America. Our government and administrators today might believe that what they are doing is right for the people but they have to also consider what is right for our nation. The way Mowry described the mentality of progressives can be used to describe the mentality of some of our administrators today, â€Å"Reactionary and reform impulse, a desire to create heaven on earth, moral superiority is greater than our economy, and lastly individualism dynamism and leadership. † These are the characteristics of progressives today and of 1958. It is true that history repeats itself.

Computer Security essays

Computer Security essays Computer security people basically protect computers, networks, etc. from hackers, viruses, and more. Until about 2 or 3 years ago, computer security wasnt needed very much. Then things like the Melissa virus, the Microsoft break-in made people realize that they needed security. Most people think that hackers are just people that want to mess up your computer, but real hackers break into systems because they want to see what they can do, then they might leave a message on the victims computer, but thats it. So, the computer security people protect from those other hackers that want to mess up peoples computers. ...
